SHOULD YOU EMPTY YOUR SAVINGS ACCOUNT FOR THAT?
2.27.2014
We all have an item we would kill for. Most of the time, these items cost way more than we can justify spending. That doesn't make us stop wanting it. In fact, we want it even more. We need it. This leads to the big question..."Should I really empty my savings account for that?"
Well, it depends. I'll walk you through some steps to help decide if that big ticket pair of shoes or bag is worth it. We'll start with the most important question:
+ Can you afford it? I mean, really afford it. Can you spend the money on your item without overdrawing your bank account or spending half of your rent money? If the answer is no, then you shouldn't purchase that pair of Christian Louboutin Pigalles right now. I don't care if they're only in stock once every 16 years. (Kidding, exaggeration. But really, no.) If you can comfortably spend the money on the item, you're one step closer to having it in your hands.
+ What is it? What is your coveted item? A pair of shoes? A gorgeous bag? If you're going to drop a couple "racks" on something, you want to be sure it's timeless. Imagine finding the most comfortable black leather pumps you've ever stuffed your little feet in. You can literally run a full marathon in them. Those, my little fashionistas, are considered timeless, or a classic. You can throw those black pumps on with anything in your wardrobe and they will match. This takes us into the next step...
+ Will you actually use it? How long can you use it? Will it last you? This is the second most important thing to consider. We talked about "classic" pieces above, but one person's classic may be different from another person's classic. A classic piece may be defined as a staple item. A comfy flat or pump. A winter boot. A Chanel flap bag. A roomy tote bag. A chic clutch. These are a few classic pieces, they can be used over and over again. Typically, I'd suggest people go for a neutral color that can go with anything and everything. However, if you're a hot pink enthusiast and wear head-to-toe hot pink every single day, then you grab that hot pink pair of Manolo Blahnik and run. Can you wear your item all the time? Year round? You would hate to spend a lot of money on an item that you can only use 4 days out of the year then stuff it in your closet to look at and weep the rest of the time.
+ How bad do you want it? I know, you want it really bad. But, how bad? Will you be able to live your life another day without it? One of my general rules of shopping is: If you're having second thoughts about purchasing it, don't do it! You need to be 100% sure you want it. Following this tip will save you a lot of Buyer's Remorse stress. You never want to feel like you've wasted your money. Trust me, I've learned the hard way. 10 times.
If you've gone through these steps and still want it, GET IT. You deserve it. Life really is too short to not enjoy the things you want and can have. The single worst feeling you can possibly ever have, and yes this applies to shopping too, is regret. I know you probably won't fall over and die if you miss out on that purse, but it would have made you really happy.
I was inspired to write this post because I was in this exact same position a few months ago. The only problem was, I didn't have my favorite blogger *wink* to help me decide. I've wanted a Classic Chanel Medium Flap in black lambskin with gold hardware for years. Possibly since the day I was born. I had finally had enough money and found the perfect vintage flap. I mean, perfect. This was a big purchase and I went back and forth whether I should go for it or not for a month. I finally stopped, sat down, and really thought about it The questions I've shared with you are all of the same questions I asked myself. I decided, "Yes! I want it! Now!" so I did it. I have not regretted it since!
I hope this helped some of you out there decide on your dream item. Has anyone made a large purchase? How did you decide to pull the trigger and get it? I'd love to hear!
I've pulled the trigger so many times I'm practically on Fashion's Most Wanted list. I kid...
ReplyDeleteHowever, I 100% agree with you. It's all about value of USE vs. cost of item. If you're going to use it every day... like a 2,000 dollar coat you will wear every day during winter. Totally worth it. A 2,000 dollar evening gown on the other hand? Maybe it's time to Rent the Runway instead.
Great post!

A coat is a great example! If it costs $2,000, it is most likely going to last you for 5+ winters. I am in Texas, so a coat would not be the smart choice for me, unfortunately. I love winter and the cold :( I'm a total purse girl and you can never go wrong with that, right?!

I had this conversation a few times and sometimes the answer is get it and sometimes it's not. Mainly after I ask myself "will you actually use it" and "how badly do you want it" Thanks for your advice and for stopping by my blog the other day!
